Fibre Attached Technology Adapted

Fibre Attached Technology Adapted (FATA) is a hybrid technology developed for Fibre Channel systems, a combination of Fibre Channel and ATA technology. Fibre Attached Technology Adapted is an ideal high capacity, low cost per GB solution. The technology behind Fibre Attached ATA or SATA disk storage makes it more affordable than mission critical Fibre Channel drives. The cost of using SATA drives is significantly less than that of Fibre Channel. 

Fibre Attached Technology Adapted disk drives have dual ports that offer reliability beyond what can be provided by a serial interface. Fibre Attached Technology Adapted is suited for use in existing Fibre Channel Storage Attached Network arrays that focus on storage of reference and backup information where high-performance Fibre Channel drives are not needed.

Nexsan was the first to announce that their ATABoy storage solution was ready for the enterprise, utilizing ATA disk drive connecting to the host via fibre. Hewlett Packard brought Fibre Attached Technology Adapted drives to the market with the Enterprise Visual Array family, developed with the Seagate drive. Seagate execs called the Fibre Attached Technology Adapted drives “server friendly serial ATA,” saying that they could be used for entry level servers. 

The Fibre Attached Technology Adapted drives increase flexibility to segment reference data that is rarely accessed like archived email, patient records, financial data, image records, etc. Additionally, Fibre Attached Technology Adapted drives are ideal for a variety of tasks:

· Backup devices for backing up to disk.
· Archival solutions (tier 2) such as Symantec Enterprise Vault.
· Replication targets: for example, replicating branch office data into the data centre.
