iSCSI SAN

iSCSI, or Internet Small Computer System Interface, combines data in TCP/IP packets and SCSI commands to link servers and storage devices over common IPs. With iSCSI technolgoy, iSCSI SAN’s (Storage Area Networks) can be supplied over standard IP networks. 

Until the iSCSI SAN, TCP/IP wasn’t used for SAN’s. Because all SAN’s are block based, there was no protocol that delivered block based accesses over IP networks until iSCSI. Today, iSCSI SAN’s are broadly supported. 

In most cases, you won’t need a separate network for iSCSI SAN. One of the major benefits of an iSCSI SAN over a Fibre Channel SAN is that you can identify the level of separation between various networks. 

iSCSI SAN Hardware:

IBM TotalStorage DS300 
The IBM TotalStorage DS300 offers a cost effective and simple iSCSI SAN solution and is ideal for organizations that need an affordable iSCSI SAN solution for various workgroup storage apps such as web, print, and file serving. The IBM TotalStorage DS300 scales to 4.2 terabytes of storage capacity when used with 300 gigabyte Ultra320 SCSI drives. 

StoreVault S500
The StoreVault S500 supports both NAS and SAN. SAN protocol supports both Fibre Channel and iSCSI SAN. The StoreVault S500 is a smart choice for organizations that need room to grow as the S500 starts at 1TB but can scale to 6TB of storage easily. Because of the iSCSI protocol, the S500 can be used as an IP SAN or be attached directly to a server.

EqualLogic
Simple is the defining word for the EqualLogic PS iSCSI based family. EqualLogic’s goal was to simplify network storage while still maintaining extreme quality. The EqualLogic PS Series includes the PS50E, PS100E, PS100X, PS200E, PS300E, PS800E, PS1200E, PS1600E, and PS2400E. The individual pieces are interchangeable and work together to provide anywhere from 1TB to 100TB of storage capacity. 

Nexsan's 14 Bay or 42 Bay SATA drive storage solution is now available with true iSCSI speed. Single or dual controller option with an option to attach to the network with both Fibre and SCSI at the same time.
