Tape Media and Tape Storage

IBM is credited with inventing tape media and tape storage in 1952. Today, tape media and tape storage is the leading way to backup critical data efficiently and effectively. IBM is still a leader in tape media and tape storage technology along with Quantam, StorageTek, Hewlett Packard, Overland, Exabyte, Breece Hill, Sony, Qualstar, Adic, Certance, and Tandberg Data.

Tape media works by applying a magnetic flux to the oxide on the tape media. Hard drives and floppy disks both rely on the same principal as magnetic tape media. The fact that tape media is thin and on reels means tape storage is much more practical than saving information on scores of hard drives, disks, or CD’s. Because of the way data is written to the tape, it’s important to store tapes away from anything with magnetic properties. Many businesses store their tape media off site to reduce the risk of loss by a natural disaster such as fire, flood, or earthquake.

No business can afford to loose its data which is why tape media and tape storage is so important. The National Archives Records Administration found that 93% of businesses that lost data for 10 or more days filed bankruptcy within 1 year. Very small businesses with limited data often choose direct access storage solutions or network access storage solutions. However, for mid to large-sized companies, tape media and tape storage is the optimal solution. With tape media, recovering data after a data loss is relatively fast and simple.
