VXA-2 uses the same data format that's been already proven with VXA-1. It shares full compatibility with VXA-1, which means it can read tapes written on a VXA-1 drive, and it can write tapes that are readable by a VXA-1. In fact, VXA-2 uses all three VXAtape cartridges already on the market for VXA-1. And, for even more high-capacity storage, VXA-2 adds one new cartridge, the V23. With four compatible tape capacities to choose from, covering the range from 20 GB to 80GB, you can fine-tune your costs of ownership to match your exact storage needs.

Fully Tested
More than 80% of the VXA-2 firmware, the sophisticated logic that controls the drive, has already been tested in years of use with VXA-1. The VXA-2 manufacturing process uses many of the same tool sets and test suites already developed for VXA-1 The only changes we've made were the ones needed to boost capacity and performance - advanced ferrite recording heads, PRML and an active rotor- for better signal processing, and an improved mechanism for precise tape handling - but without sacrificing reliability This means that VXA-2 comes to you as an exceptionally mature second-generation drive. You can be sure it's ready to take the challenge of the most demanding uses and environments.

Reliability
VXA tape drives format data in packets. This innovative approach to tape data storage was introduced with VXA-1 in 1999. VXA's patented Discrete Packet Format (DPFT) has been proven through years of field experience as the most flexible and most reliable tape format available today.

Exabyte VXAtape™ cartridges are the perfect complement to VXA™ technology. They provide the necessary features needed for Exabyte VXA-1 and VXA-2 tape drives, autoloaders, and libraries.

To take advantage of highly advanced VXA technology, you need an equally advanced data storage media. VXAtape uses Advance Metal Evaporated (AME) technology developed specifically to deliver the durability and capacity required for high-performance tape drives. VXAtape AME has significant advantages over conventional Metal Particle (MP) media.
