Overview |
With the growing reliance on client/
server computing, organizations of all sizes are turning to
server-based databases to store their mission-critical
data. Because these databases are often the most important
information resource in their enterprise, organizations need
storage solutions that can provide high performance, large
capacity, data integrity, and reliability for important business
applications. In addition, the increased use of data storage to
provide better customer service and improved business solutions
requires fast, dependable, and affordable disk-to-tape backup
operations and large data archive and retrieval facilities. To help
address these demanding data backup, restore, and archive
application requirements, users can turn to the IBM 7205 40 GB
External Digital Tape Drive Model 440.
The IBM 7205 Model 440 is an external, stand-alone, SCSI-attached, DLT drive that attaches to both IBM RS/6000*and IBM ~pSeries*
families of workstations and servers. The IBM 7205 Model 440
features a native transfer rate of up to 6 MB/sec, with a native
cartridge capacity of 40 GB. The IBM 7205 Model 440 also supports
2:1 data compression, providing an effective capacity of up to 80
GB and an effective data transfer rate of up to 12 MB/sec. The
actual degree of compression is highly dependent on the
characteristics of the data being compressed, such as block size
and data format. |

Digital
Linear Tape Technology |
| The IBM 7205 Model 440 provides
noticeable advantages in performance and capacity compared to
previous versions, such as the Model 311.To help provide accurate
operations, the tape leader supports consistent tape motion, while a
unique tape/reel locking mechanism prevents tape slack. The tape
media features a special highgrade metal particle formula that
reduces tape and head wear and employs a 208-track serial
serpentine variable block recording format. The IBM 7205 Model 440
is backward-compatible with previous DLT formats. |

|
An integrated
software solution |
| The IBM 7205 Model 440 includes its own
device driver that is used by save/ restore utilities provided
with the AIX* operating system. Managing the IBM 7205 Model 440
with industry-leading tape management and soft ware solutions such
as Tivoli Storage Manager** or those from other soft ware
providers can simplify its use. |
